CicloSDias in City Heights: A Day of Community and Car-Free Fun

City Heights came alive this past weekend. Residents, families, and local businesses filled University Avenue for CicloSDias, a celebration of car-free streets. The event, hosted in partnership with the City of San Diego, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, and City Heights CDC, transformed over a mile of our busy corridor into an open street, welcoming everyone to walk, bike, skate, and explore our community.

Each year, CicloSDias is hosted in a different San Diego neighborhood, inviting families and residents to enjoy a unique car-free experience. In City Heights, the celebration was made even more special by the participation of local businesses that hosted community altars honoring Día de los Muertos, and family-friendly activities like bubble stations, face painting, and Zumba, filling the corridor with music, food, and our community’s spirit.

Our Transportation and Planning team kicked off the day with a community bike ride from New Roots Community Farm to University Avenue, inviting local families and participants from our City Heights CDC programs to join.

University Avenue businesses welcomed visitors with special offers and activities throughout the day. Rosa’s Ice Cream offered a buy-one-get-one deal, Aqua Fruit served fresh ceviche, and Stay True Cycle Works gave riders 10% off bike tune-ups, offering services that make City Heights businesses unique.

“Our City Heights community is filled with incredible amenities, from local parks and small businesses to cultural spaces that bring people together,” said Alexis Villanueva, President and CEO of City Heights CDC. “When we’re able to open our streets during events like CicloSDias, everyone gets to experience the beauty, energy, and connection that make City Heights a vibrant reflection of community pride.”

Events like CicloSDias highlight how community partnerships can transform shared spaces into places of joy and belonging. Through continued collaboration with our City Heights Business Improvement District (BID), Maintenance Assessment District (MAD), and local partners, we hope to continue bringing events like CicloSDias that uplift our community and the University Ave business corridor.

Thank you to our residents, businesses, and team for making CicloSDias in City Heights an unforgettable day.
