City Heights CDC's Annual Turkey Distribution Delivers More Than 200 Turkeys to City Heights Residents
More than 200 turkeys were distributed to our City Heights community.
This year, we brought the turkeys directly to our affordable housing apartment communities supported by Resident Services.
Thanks to our partnerships with Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank, our Resident Services team picked up more than 14 dozen turkeys and purchased additional dozens from local grocery stores. This ensured that more than 200 residents, many of whom pre-registered through our Resident Services and Transportation and Planning programs, received a turkey ahead of Thanksgiving.
Not all residents celebrate the holiday, yet many are grateful to receive this once-a-year gift. What makes it more meaningful is the simplicity of walking to our Resident Services team during an allotted time and picking up a guaranteed holiday meal.
With the recent loss of SNAP benefits affecting residents across our community, we are doubling down on efforts to ensure food security for families and residents in City Heights. We continue supplying food pantries across our properties, sharing local food resources, and are preparing to launch an Emergency Food Pantry Hotline to connect households with available support that will also provide direct food or grocery gift cards to residents in immediate need, a resource we intend to make available across the San Diego region.
We are also working with neighborhood restaurants and the City Heights Business Improvement District on a food voucher program that allows families in crisis to receive free or discounted meals while supporting our local restaurants.
Food is a right and access must remain available. We will continue working closely with partners and invite you to join us in expanding the voucher and pantry programs supported by Resident Services. These efforts are made possible by many hands, one community, and one shared mission.
