It happens every year on Martin Luther King Jr. day, and it’s happening right now.

Well-meaning people share his more palatable, more agreeable statements while avoiding the simple fact that MLK held very radical views throughout his life, and those views are still applicable to today.

Alexis knows how it feels to be forced out of City Heights. She’s been displaced.

“I remember the landlord talking about how he was going to make more money and that would mean us moving out,” she recalled.

With a record number of San Diegans out of work and still struggling under the pandemic, we’re challenging community members with the resources to consider donating any portion of their stimulus checks.

Miriam served her country, she worked two jobs, she's a full time student, she never missed a rent payment, but the weight of this pandemic is threatening to break everything she's worked so hard to build for herself and her kids.

“For me, I got my first glimpse of promotora work watching my auntie. After a long hard day of work, she would take the time to connect with neighbors and friends and check in on them. She often found ways to connect people with the resources or contacts they needed at that time.”

This is Esperanza, a pillar of our community and one of the promotora healthcare community advocates we're supporting in the battle against COVID-19.

Let's not sugar coat it: 2020 was hard.

The year was endlessly difficult. Yet you, the amazing City Heights community, chose to step into the confusion and to be a force for good.

The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is planning the future Purple Line rail transit and other mobility improvements from South Bay, to Mid-City, to Sorrento, and the first meeting is happening today from 2:00-4:00 pm.

Nearly 40 years ago, our founders mobilized around a shared belief in the power of community.

Too often when a community or neighborhood faces a problem, the community isn’t seen as the key to solving that problem. It happened at our founding, when non locals began carving up streets and making decisions about our community without our consent, and it still happens today.

Exciting milestone alert! Together, we’ve helped over 300 evictions! Your donations are helping these households stay safely in their homes and off the streets.

Friends, this is why we’re working in partnership with the San Diego Latino Health Coalition and amazing promotoras like Miriam! Resources are out there. Education is out there. A healthy reopening of our economy is possible, but we must work in partnership and focus on more equitable services if we’re going to get there!

“I love getting involved in new things, trying new things and just exploring. I’ve been in many clubs and organizations, just trying to get an idea of what I like to do. I really want to keep growing as a person, ya know?”

“From the get-go, my parents—being immigrants—instilled in me the value of hard work,” Erick shared. “I’ve worked hard, and now I’m set to graduate valedictorian of my high school.”

Like so many young people in City Heights, Hana knows the struggle, hustle, and resilient hard work of a new immigrant here. Her parents taught her the value of education, and now she is going to college and majoring in aerospace engineering.

“My family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when I was three years old. I still remember landing in LAX...”

Thang is one of the winners of our City Heights Legacy Scholarship, and he has big plans. He worked hard and overcame plenty of obstacles to reach this point. He seems happy, but he remembers hard times.

Latinos are dying at a much higher rate to COVID-19.

34% of San Diego county are Latinx, yet they make up 61% of infections and 45% of the deaths.

So what can we do? It’s a tough, complicated question, but that's why it's so important we ask it—and we are doing something about it!
