The SR-15 Commuter Bikeway Opens Soon!

This is a big week for grand openings in Mid City.  Hours ago the Wightman Street Park opened and tomorrow the SR-15 Commuter Bikeway opens!

Both projects are the results of community leadership and advocacy.  For the State Route-15 Commuter Bikeway, the work began about 35 years ago when discussions to extend the SR-15 freeway through the middle of City Heights took off.

Community leaders worked together to make sure that the freeway wouldn't undercut community cohesion.  City Heights CDC launched the Visions Project; a community-driven planning endeavor that resulted in a Complete Corridor vision.  This planted the seed for the creation of Teralta Park which is built on top of the freeway, active transportation bridges, the CenterLine Transit Stations, and the SR-15 Commuter Bikeway.  Community leaders and advocates have worked together since that time to make sure that the vision would be realized.

The opening of the concrete-protected SR-15 Commuter Bikeway is a milestone for Mid City.  A small ribbon cutting ceremony is taking place tomorrow, Wednesday, August 30 at 11am at Terrace Drive Mini Park near the intersection of Terrace Dr & Adams Ave in Kensington.

Funded by SANDAG and designed, built and maintained by Caltrans, the SR-15 Commuter Bikeway will connect Mid City and Mission Valley with a separated and fully protected bikeway alongside the SR-15 from Adams Ave to Camino Del Rio South.

Another milestone is around the corner -- CenterLine Stations  for the Rapid 235 are set to open in a few months.  SANDAG, Caltrans, and City Heights CDC are working on a community event to celebrate the completion of both the CenterLine Stations and the Commuter Bikeway later this fall, more information to come soon.

After 35 years of advocacy, Mid City now has a safe and convenient way to ride to and from Mission Valley.  What better way to celebrate a milestone than with a bike ride? Bring your bike and (plenty of water) and be some of the first to ride this new route!

Ride safe,
