Friends, please join us in welcoming Haneen Mohamed to the team!

A recent graduate of UC San Diego’s Urban Studies & Planning program, Haneen received “Best Thesis” for her research on historically Black mosques for placemaking in Black Muslim communities. Haneen’s passion for justice, planning, and working in communities like City Heights make her a perfect addition to our Transportation & Planning team!

“I’ve lived all over the world, and everywhere I lived there was a close-knit Sudanese community. They know how to take care of each other, and my investment in social justice was born out my love for the Sudanese diaspora and my experiences growing up as a Black Muslim woman. It’s where my passions lie, and it’s why I’m invested in this work.”

She also knows and loves City Heights from her time doing workshops around Black Muslim identity for high school students in the community. “When studying in La Jolla, I would visit City Heights for the familiarity, it was nice to be in proximity to people who looked like me so much to where I'd be spoken to in Amharic - despite being Sudanese. Those offhand interactions alone brought me immense comfort."

Pair all that with Haneen’s graphic design and organizing skills, and you can see why we’re so glad to have her aboard!

“It’s tough to tell my story in a sanitized, linear way… but I believe that complexity and fluidity is an innate part of what makes our narratives authentic.”
