Meet Dr. Rodriguez, A Kumeyaay Speaker & Professor (Story 2/40)

Dr. Stanley Rodriguez recently stopped by New Roots Community Farm to gift the gardeners with native plants!

A committed mentor to the native peoples of the region and one of 33 remaining Kumeyaay language speakers, Dr. Rodriguez works to share and preserve indigenous culture, language, and practices in the region.

“This is high desert agave,” he shared while holding out a tough looking little succulent.

“We love it for its resilience. The fibers make great nets, rope, and sandals, and you can roast it for a very sweet taste, something like a cross between a sweet potato and a pineapple.”

These moments of learning and intercultural sharing are a core theme in City Heights, and essential voices like Dr. Rodriguez’s remind us what a privilege it is to be part of this community!
