“It felt good because I was the first one in my family to actually graduate. No one from my whole generation had the opportunity to go to college; it’s a big deal for my family.” Roda’s face shines with a wide, proud smile.

From an Ethiopian refugee camp to being a student at Mira Costa College, Roda continues to face challenges, but she refuses to allow anything to interfere with her goals of graduating from college.

Never shying away from a challenge, Roda loves the effort, the journey, the work along the way, regardless of the outcome. Her advice for other aspiring students?

“I would just say try your best; even when I applied to the [scholarship] program, I never thought I would actually get in. You just need to put in the effort and you will get it back.”

This same City Heights Legacy Fund Scholarship that helped Roda reach her dream is now accepting applications! Please apply below, and forward the application on to others you know!
