How do you revitalize a community---especially a poor one? The answer is simple, with people who care, people like you. City Heights is one of the oldest and most diverse communities in San Diego where people come from all over the world to create a better life and work hard to live the American dream. But, this community is also one of the poorest, where the median household income is only half that of San Diego and the vast majority of children live far below the poverty line.
City Heights has the highest percent (79% of 22,985) of households living at or below 80% of Area Median Income countywide. As the most ethnically diverse region of San Diego County, many newly arrived immigrants and refugees are limited in their English proficiency. With these facts in mind, City Heights has the greatest need for affordable housing and employment development programs that provide on-the-job training services. Many residents are unemployed due to layoffs and struggle to find new jobs because of a lack of employable skills. The current recession has wreaked havoc on many communities in San Diego, but none has been hit so hard as the residents of City Heights. CHCDC's economic development programs focus on job creation, preparation, training, and placement while its affordable housing provides needed quality housing to meet basic needs, encourage community pride and involvement, and enhance neighborhood environments for the residents of City Heights.
